BiographyBorn in Toledo, Ohio, Elaine Pacer Moore has 5 brothers including her twin Bob. While Elaine's parents did not push higher education, they emphasized its importance. Elaine's brothers all have advanced degrees and two of her brothers, Richard Pacer and John Pacer, have PhDs in Chemistry. Elaine graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Medical Technology, completing her internship in medical technology at Mercy Hospital in Toledo. She's a clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) and ASCP certified medical technologist, MT (ASCP). Shortly after college graduation, she married Rick Moore and they moved to Colorado Springs. Elaine and Rick are the parents of two grown children, Brett and Lisa. Elaine has worked at various hospital laboratories in Ohio, Colorado, and Idaho, primarily in the field of Toxicology, and she attended graduate school at the University of Colorado. Elaine helped develop numerous laboratory procedures and worked as a NIDA certifying official and a laboratory supervisor during her hospital career. Elaine's interest in writing sparked in the early 1990s when she became involved in several online medical support groups. Eventually, she decided she could better serve her audience by writing traditional books as well as online articles. Elaine believes that all good books should have permanent homes in libraries. For this reason, she approached McFarland Publishers, a company known for publishing scholarly reference works. Elaine's first book is considered one of the primary patient references on Graves' disease. She has also written books on autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's disease, sexually transmitted diseases, thyroid eye disease, low dose naltrexone, and hepatitis. Because of her medical background and personal familiarity with autoimmune disease and toxicology, Elaine is able to address pertinent diagnostic and treatment topics in a way that's easy to understand. In July 2009, Elaine hung up her lab coat and began a full-time career of writing and working as a laboratory consultant. She is currently the Health Series Editor for McFarland and enjoys discovering new health writers. Besides her interest in medicine, Elaine has a passion for fiction, gambling, hiking and music. Elaine is a guest editor at the about.com hyperthyroidism board, a regular contributor to mediboard and other online support groups, and she writes a weekly column on spas and on autoimmune disorders for the Canadian website, www.suite101.com.
